Program Description

Sabancı University Data Science Master's program with Thesis is a focused, yet comprehensive and competent master's program designed for those who want to specialize in data science and conduct research. It has been designed to have graduation requirements that are suitable for students who will start their professional life as well as those who will pursue a doctorate degree. The medium of instruction is English.

Program Objectives

Data Science can be briefly summarized as extracting value from data. In this respect, it comprises the necessary approaches for data-based analysis or solutions of problems from many different fields, from banking to the energy sector, from computational social sciences to image processing or speech recognition. The aim of the program is to provide a comprehensive curriculum that will enable career paths in different sectors that require expertise in data science. With this perspective, it offers a training program and research opportunities to equip candidates with the necessary tools in the main areas of Data Science (statistics, machine learning and optimization) so that they canspecialize in their desired sub field.

Qualification Awarded

The Master 's Degree in Data Science (second cycle in Data Science) is awarded to the graduates who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum.

Specific Admission Requirements

Student admission to the program is explained in detail in the Sabancı University Graduate Education Regulations under the heading Quotas and Student Admission.

In addition to students with engineering background, students from other fields such as statistics, mathematics, and economics can be admitted to Data Science, as long as they have the necessary foundational background.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Students must obtain a grade point average of at least 3.00 out of 4.00 and successfully pass all courses on the programme.

Recognition of Prior Learning

"Exemptness from the courses which are included in transfer and student exchange programs are regulated by the related articles in Information on the Instruction Letter For Sabancı Unıversity Graduate. At Sabancı University, apart from formal education institutions, there is no recognition process for informal-based or experience-based (in-formal and non-formal) learning."

  1. Understand the conceptual foundations of analytical methods and techniques for data science
  2. Understand the theory and practice of applied information systems by developing the necessary computer software skills
  3. Transform high-volume data sets into actionable information format and use statistical data analysis tools to support decision making within the corporate structure
  4. Understand and apply quantitative modeling and data analysis techniques to extract information from big data and use these findings to analyze business problems, present results using data visualization tools and report findings
  5. Understand data quality, data integrity and data veracity, recognize ethical aspects of business related to intellectual property and data privacy

Data Science graduate program graduates can find employment opportunities in companies operating in the field of data science, such as banking, mobile games, e-commerce, and continue their academic careers in doctoral programs in this field. They use the competencies they have gained in natural language processing, computer vision, deep learning, optimization and data visualization in R&D studies in industry and in solving problems they encounter in academic life. The fact that more research-oriented graduates may be preferred by companies with R&D departments, as well as graduates who have an academic career, continue their studies at the doctoral level abroad and in Turkey.
