Program Description

MA and PhD programs launched in 2000-2001. The program concentrates on Ottoman and Modern Turkish History. It aims to foster fresh, unbiased and critical visions of the Ottoman-Turkish past that are informed by the novel theoretical insights and comparative sensibilities characterizing leading-edge practice in historical studies. Language of instruction is English.

Program Objectives

The aim of History MA program is to provide an opportunity for all undergraduate students with diverse undergraduate backgrounds to acquire a solid academic basis on Ottoman and modern Turkish history.In its innovative and comprehensive approach to the field of Ottoman and Modern Turkish field of studies, the History Programs benefits from the wide-ranging professional capabilities of its academic staff as well as from the interdisciplinary make-up of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.The program is envisaged as constituing a total and integral course of study that promotes research in diverse areas ranging from political and legal to intellectual and cultural history as well as nationalism studies.

Qualification Awarded

The Master 's Degree in History ( second cycle in History) is awarded to the graduates who have successfully completed all courses in the curriculum.

Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Students must obtain a grade point average of at least 3.00 out of 4.00 and successfully pass all courses on the programme.

Recognition of Prior Learning

At Sabancı University, apart from formal education institutions, there is no recognition process for informal-based or experience-based (in-formal and non-formal) learning.

  1. Demonstrate command of comparative perspectives, which may include the ability to compare the histories of different societies, or cultures awareness of continuity and change over extended time spans.
  2. Construct concepts and theories derived from the humanities and social sciences.
  3. Analyze the evidence from the research to support a historical argument for an answer to a research question.
  4. Apply a critical perspective to evaluating historical arguments, including the quality of the sources, the validity of the interpretations of those sources, and the soundness of the argument's use of evidence to support a historical interpretation.
  5. Develop and sustain historical arguments in a variety of literary forms, formulating appropriate questions and utilizing evidence.
